Department Description
The Department of Architecture was established in 1957 as part of University of Madras in the AC Tech building to offer B.Arch degree course .Subsequently, in 1968 the Department was renamed as School of Architecture and Planning moved to an independent campus incorporating also the Department of Planning. In 1978, SAP became a constituent institution in the newly established Anna University. Further, master degree courses in Architecture also began to offer and intake also increased in order to serve the society at large. From the year 2005, the Department of Architecture started functioning again as an independent university department with self-directed purpose to achieve its goals and aspirations.
Vision
The Department of Architecture is committed to excellence in the field of architectural education and the discipline of architecture through its pedagogical, research, extension and outreach activities, directed towards the betterment of the world that we inhabit, in all realms shaped by architecture. It shall uphold universal moral and ethical values in all endeavours that it undertakes and be exemplary in creating positive transformations.

- To tap and strengthen the innate potential of each student and deepen their knowledge/skills in order to enable them to self-actualise as well as become catalysts for positive change.
- To contribute to immediate context, larger society and the world through knowledge creation and dissemination.
- To engage and extend the expertise of the department in addressing and solving of issues/problems related to the built environment.
- To actively interact and collaborate with professionals, educational institutions and other related organisations at all scales in order to collectively further the cause of appropriate architecture.
MESSAGE FROM OUR HOD

At the department of Architecture our endeavour is to hone the creativity as well as the technical knowledge of the students. Here, the focus is on practical learning, with emphasis on doing and learning. In addition to class room learning, the students engage in varied activities such as interactive workshops, participating in NASA (National Association of Students of Architecture), national and international design competitions and organizing technical symposiums. In addition, expert lectures from the leaders in the field from India and abroad enrich the learning experience of the students. The Department is strengthened by contributions from a large number of visiting faculty from the field, thus ensuring that the learning is up to date and industry appropriate. Collaborations with Institutions of calibre from India and abroad in the form of joint studios and exchange programmes encourage peer learning and exposure to other cultures of learning. The teaching and non teaching staff of the department interact comprehensively with the students thus ensuring mentoring and guidance is always available for the students. Our campus is very well designed which spaces that enable formal and informal discussions on the subject of Architecture, design, society, art and other topics, creating an fertile environment that fosters creativity and innovation.
